Chapter Three
Today was Fern’s first day back at work after some time off. She had been working at SirTech for a few months now but was still not fully accustomed to all different systems and she mainly spent her time in the basement. She arrived at work in the R&D department early to get logged on but she found she was locked out of her computer. “Oh dear” she thought.
She called the IT help desk number on the back of her Badge but only got through to a recorded message suggesting she try switching it on and off again. Fern undocked her laptop and got back into the lift to take it up to IT.
Somehow the IT department at SirTech seemed to have the biggest and most well equipped offices.
“Hello, my name’s Tanya welcome to IT, have you filed a support ticket?” asked an office worker near the lift.
“No I’m pretty new here” replied Fern while ogling the posh looking coffee machine in the IT department break room. “We don’t get coffee machines like that in the basement” she thought to herself.
“Take a seat and someone will be with you shortly” said Tanya.
Fern perched on a SirTech branded beanbag chair next to the coffee table trying not to look too awkward. The belt testers don’t normally come this far up in the building.
“...Let’s action the 20% increase on lottery links” someone said as a crowd of smart but geeky looking office workers exited a meeting room and headed for the coffee machines.
“Excuse me, I can’t log into my computer” Fern interrupted.
“Let’s take a look at it then, follow me.” sighed one of the women.
Fern followed the office worker into a big office with “Jenna – Head of IT” on the door.
Fern explained that she had returned from being off sick but couldn’t log into her computer and hasn't been able to do any work all morning. Fern handed Jenna the laptop and Jenna rolled her eyes and pointed down towards the keyboard… “You’ve got caps lock on” she said.
“OH” said Fern.
“We really need to improve our new start induction training. I’ll raise that in my next meeting with Sir” smirked Jenna.
